As you can tell by its name, BeatNav’s key feature is to navigate you through the beats. Metric Modulation has always been an issue for musicians because of its complexity. BeatNav is here to change everything, simply add your home and target tempo and BeatNav shows you a fully editable way to create your modulation in any Time Signature.

BeatNav’s metric modulation system is split into 3 categories. The “One-Step”, the “Two-Step” and the “Three-Step” results. After you selected your target tempo you will be given the choice to choose one of the three. The three categories express how many steps you need to take in order to reach your target tempo and they also indicate the level of difficulty of a modulation, from easy to hard accordingly.

The one-step results will be consisted by two lines, in the first you are requested to multiply your home tempo’s crochet into the value that is indicated by the ratio on the left. Example: ratio 3:1 = 3 values in every crochet, in this instance, a triplet. The second line will give you your target tempo in the time signature of your choice.

The two-step results will again be consisted by two individual lines with the difference that in the first line, your requested to create values and then accent them. That will again be indicated by your ratio on the left of the line. This time the ratio will give you two numbers, the first one will be the number of values in a quarter note and the second one would be the accent. Example: ratio 3:2 = 3 values in a crochet accented every 2.

The three-step results are the same as the two-step with the difference that we added an extra line for practise purposes. These results are consisted by three lines in which you are requested to both multiply your crochet and then multiply again and accent. The three-step results are mainly composed by faster values that many times derive from related slower ones. The first line in a three-step result show the simple form of the values that are requested to achieve the metric modulation and the second line the actual values and their accents. Example, in a three-step result you may get the ratio 14:4, BeatNav gives you an extra line in which you can practise 7:1 in order to get the feel of the Septuplet and the speed.
